BSA A65 Mk11 Spitfire Engine
HISTORY
I bought this engine some time ago, it was a back-up for spares for my own Spitfire. It had been standing in a leaky shed with the side and rocker covers removed.
Now retired, I finally found time this August to examine it. To my amazement! đ˛ This engine has done very little running, and certainly never been stripped down before.
It is on a Standard Crank â Main Bearings and Big Ends. In addition, the Bores have no signs of any wear at all.
FAULTS FOUND
One of the âCamâ lobes was completely shot (In Pics). I can only assume this was down to poor âCase Hardeningâ as the âcam Followersâ were perfect.
One valve inlet was in poor condition and seized into its guide (Cast Iron) from a period of standing.
Primary Drive Chain, Crank Sprocket and Clutch Basket beyond redemption from rust.
Alternator windings were damaged.
Oil Pump Rev Counter drive lug was broken. I am putting that down to me âTurning the engine overâ with the âDrive Shaftâ seized.
WORK CARRIED OUT
Cleaned and rebuilt bottom end. New seals, Tab washers, Gaskets and a 68-473 Camshaft. Installed a new 21 Tooth Gearbox Final Drive Sprocket.
The Oil Pump was stripped and rebuilt with a new Tacho Drive.
Replaced the Primary Drive Chain, Sprocket and Clutch Basket, with good serviceable Clutch Plates fitted.
The Cylinders were given a light hone, and the block given a gloss black finish.
New Piston Assemblies fitted (Rings gapped at 8 Thou). The old pistons were serviceable, but very little difference in cost between a new set of rings, gudgeons and clips.
Cylinder head â68-701â stripped and phosphor bronze guides fitted. Seats redressed and valves lapped in (New Inlets). New valve springs fitted.
Oil feed/return pipes replaced with the later direct rocker feed type.
New cylinder head studs and bolts fitted.
New style âEnclosed Windingâ Alternator and Rotor Fitted.
External fasteners replaced where available.
WORK/PARTS REQUIRED TO FINISH
Clutch Rod Plunger and Bearing required, and press springs need re-setting.
Rev Counter shaft and Outer Housing required. (Old one seized in housing with damage to cable thread)
Ignition timing will need doing; will come with cam and advance, the pointâs plate assembly and fittings. I have not fitted as âElectronic Ignitionâ may be the purchaserâs choice.
Tappets will require setting.
Outer casings would benefit from a good polish.
Oil levels will require checking.
This engine will require âRunning Inâ. It has only been turned over on the bench.
The âKick Startâ and âGear Leverâ are not included
